Are You the Coach Who Pretends They "Keep Their Sh*t Together?"

men in sport Sep 23, 2022

One of the common discussions I've had with the coaches within The Lost to Liberated Blueprint has been around stepping into vulnerability versus keeping your sh*t together.

There is a great fear of being vulnerable.

Why?

Because many of us are defending a story about ourselves "as the guy who keeps their sh*t together."

An example of how this shows up is that we are often there for others, but not for ourselves.

The coaches in the group have openly discussed that they are very open to being there for friends and relatives who are having emotionally tough times. But then keep their own emotional pain & troubles to themselves out of fear of coming across as weak.

When we defend a story about who we think we are, we deny an authentic expression of who we truly are.

We pretend we can take on more hours, training sessions, athletes, responsibility, data to analyse, programming... e.t.c. whatever it is we feel makes us look like a successful member of the performance support staff team.

As you know, this comes at a MASSIVE cost e.g. depression, anxiety, divorce, physical illness due to repression of emotions e.t.c. I am seeing this time and again in the work, I do.

And I have lived this very reality myself.

So the questions I want to ask are:

  1. What are the stories that you are telling yourself?
  2. How does each of them limit you?
  3. How do they shape your decisions; What do they have you do or not do?
  4. What are you pretending not to know?

On the other side of discomfort is your freedom!
